New models have suggested that Planet Earth contains some 8.7 Million different species. Previously estimated at anywhere from 3 to 100 Million. However even with this estimate the majority still remain unknown to science. New research suggests that some 6.5 million species live on the land and 2.2 million in the oceans. All of this with some 86% terrestrial and 91% of marine animals still to be identified. The paper was published in the Plos Biology Journal by the public library service. Link:
